For as long as I can remember, the first question most Nigerians ask you when you tell them you study psychology is, “Can you read my mind?” On behalf of every psychology major ever, I’m here to tell you; NO! we cannot read your minds.
While it’s fun to lie to little kids that you can read their minds and score cool uncle points, the question gets more intolerable by the day, and the more people ask that, the more I want to actually tell them what I’m thinking.
I don’t know who started this rumour but my money is on primary school teachers, because that’s what they made me believe till I got to Uni and realized I couldn’t even read my lecturer’s mind and see he was going to give me an F.
I strongly suspect this misconception is loosely based on psychism or extrasensory perception (ESP) or some other kind of pseudo psychology (Yes, I’m a shark sometimes) whatever it is, that’s not what psychology is, so stop bothering us with these questions.
For those of you who don’t know, Psychology is the study of behavior and mind, embracing all aspects of conscious and unconscious experience as well as thought. It is an academic discipline and a social science which seeks to understand individuals and groups by establishing general principles and researching specific cases. (I googled this, like you should have before assuming psychologists can read your mind)
Job opportunities for Psychology graduates includes, clinical psychology, occupational psychology, foreign psychology, etc. Notice how Psychic did not make it to the list? Yeah, let’s keep it that way.
Now that that is out of the way, I’ll like to excuse myself to go and read some minds. I joke I joke, or am I? But seriously, don’t do that guys. It’s not cool anymore (it has never been anymore). So next time you see your friend who studies psychology, it’s okay to have a conversation about something else that doesn’t involve him reading your mind.
