Nigeria is a country full of people with talents that will break world records if only they can get the needed support and encouragement.

26-year-old Ibrahim Adekunle is neither an electrical electronic genius or a mechanical engineering graduate/student but he has created a record that most Nigerian graduates of these courses cannot break in years to come following his invention of a Limousine Tricycle – a regular tricycle popularly called Keke Marwa, but stretched to contain more seats than usual.

The inventor, speaking during an interview with Adeola Adeyemo of BellaNaija, revealed that he was forced to drop-out of school at primary four as a result of financial constraints. Thereafter, he trained as a blacksmith and welder, but his knack for reconstructing and remodeling transport vehicles has ensured that despite his little formal education, his name is known across the world for good.

For ten years now, Ibrahim has been piecing independent motor parts together to bring something new. From his bicycle that can take as much as three people, his motorcycle that can carry an unbelievable number of six, to his Limousine tricycle that can take as much as ten passengers including the driver.

A few weeks ago, Ibrahim’s Limousine Tricycle was one of the five selected inventions on the BBC’s coverage of the Maker Faire Africa, an exhibition for inventors which took place in Lagos. The picture of his wonderful invention earned the admiration of many but also raised a lot of questions.

Talking about how he realised his idea, Ibrahim who operates from under the Oregun-Opebi link bridge in Ikeja, Lagos, said he bought a fairly used keke marwa at 180,000, cut it into two and purchased a lot of other parts to construct his version of the transport system.

“All the parts I bought cost about N150,000,” he said.
