According to the team, this string, when used to tag any location (for example a hotel), uniquely identifies it down to the exact building and can also be used to identify entire regions, e.g. the string NG-AK31UY would represent the entire region of Nigeria > Akwa Ibom State > Uyo > Uyo Urban.
“The product is still in its very early stages and it can only get better especially through collaborative efforts. We cannot possibly provide every address so we need people to contribute. People can actually suggest new addresses and flag those that might be wrong and need corrections.” says Olayinka Success, the team lead.
The Locations API aims to simplify pinpointing of every physical location with a longitudinal & latitudinal address and corresponding driving instruction. It can similar addresses and can predict locations with accuracy and has a recognizable unique identifier for places that didn’t previously have postal codes.
The team says all physical addresses can easily be linked to each other via their unique code, and driving instructions from any location to the next will be computed based on that.
Released in alpha as an open data project free to download,modify and fix, the locations API is will have an API that allows us to effortlessly identify locations without many problems.
The team was part of Hotels.ng ambitious internship program. A fully paid and fully remote software development internship in Nigeria which saw 170 interns register to receive training to solve real world problems. As the first product to come out of the internship program, the referencing system for addresses aims to help Nigeria addressing problem, an issue in a majority of emerging markets.
Though addressing and pinpointing locations can be very difficult and complex, the platform aims to help players in the eCommerce space, courier firms among others to easily locate their destinations as failed deliveries are commonplace causing inconvenience to customers and raising delivery costs
