Kwara United coach John Sam Obuh insists that Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr still has a lot to do tactically despite a 2-1 win against Zambia in Ndola.

Premier League stars, Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho both hit the target in the first match on Sunday to deliver the first three points in the group C of the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

Obuh, who was in charge of the Under-20 national team, Flying Eagles, from 2010 to 2013, hailed the team’s good start to the World Cup campaign but advised against making some mistakes that were made in the game in the future.

“I congratulate Nigerians for the victory playing away from home. For some time we have been in pains getting such result,” Obuh told Goal.

“But that doesn’t mean we don’t have some mistakes. I’m very sure that the coach is going to work. There were a lot of players who played out of position but it seems he is seeing them from his own perspective.

“Ndidi [Wilfred] who played from the right-back is usually from the left-back. Shehu [Abdullahi] who plays from the holding midfielder is usually from the right-back. I’m sure he is trying to adjust the team to suit him and the type of tactic and approach he wants as far as the game is concern.

“I will want him to try as much as position to have a player in the holding position who will not be drifting into the attacking position too much because we are going to play Algeria next which is going to be a little bit tough.

“I want to urge the attackers to try as much as possible to convert as quick as possible, though they had an advantage of using the opportunity that came – at least with 60% of it was converted.”

“Generally, they should try as much to manage the pressure on the defense that the goalkeeper was facing because they were allowing shots to come from the midfield into the goalkeeper,” he continued.

“When the goalkeeper is not seeing the ball very well, there is could be high chances of conceding a goal. The defense should try to brace up and add confidence into their game.

“They are coming to play in Nigeria where much pressure will be on them than they are playing away. And the NFF should try and provide more friendly games to enable them play more together.

“I think he should always try to tell his team to always learn how to retain his goals. Goals kept are better way to victory than goal scored and conceded. Like when we were leading by 2-0, I had expected that the game plan to change.

“Trying to make them understand that if we cannot score more goals, let’s try to defend the goals we have scored.

“Because, immediately they scored us, we had so much on us. Let us try to know when to keep the goals we have scored and when to go for more. That a practical way the coach need to put in his coach’s mind.”

Obuh also advised Rohr to introduce more local-based players to encourage competition in the team.

“Like us not think it is uhuru yet, I have to believe he has a lot to do to build the team. I expected him to introduced one of the local players. In a game like this against an African teams, you expect he brings in one or two players.

“If he does not introduce the when that are playing locally in place of those playing abroad, so that they can be prepare in case of any emergency. He really has to work very hard because he has great squad to work with,” he concluded.
