The first refugee team to the Olympics have touched down to a huge crowd and warm welcome in Rio.
The team is inspiring the world and has been tagged bravery beyond borders. A group of young men and women who defied their circumstances and informed the world that being a refugee is only a status.
The Olympians are independent Olympic participants.
In March 2016 the International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach declared that the IOC would choose five to ten refugees to compete at the Rio Olympics, in the context of the “worldwide refugee crisis”, of which the European migrant crisis is a prominent part.
The athletes are expected to compete under the Olympic Flag and would be called “Team of Refugee Olympic Athletes”, with the IOC country code ROA.
